Motion Identity

Back Market

An ownable, behavioral expression of circularity. A brand mission seen and felt.

Context

Backmarket has built its business around a simple belief: technology deserves more than one life. As the brand evolved, there was a growing need for motion to do more than support communication. It needed to become a behavioral expression of circularity itself, translating the brand's mission into something audiences could immediately see and feel.

Outcome

To translate that belief into motion, we developed a motion identity centered on a revolving behavior inspired by the continuous lifecycle of circular tech. Through extensive iteration, pressure-testing, and refinement, the behavior evolved into the foundation of a broader motion system, giving Back Market an ownable way to express its mission through a recognizable set of behaviors across campaigns, events, and everyday communications.

Motion System & Process

Back Market's motion identity began with a key behavior: Circularity.

Inspired by the continuous lifecycle of circular technology, we developed a sweeping revolving movement that translated the brand's mission into something audiences could immediately recognize and feel.

More than a signature, this behavior became the foundation for how the entire identity moved. Every motion decision traced back to the same underlying expression of circularity, giving the brand a distinct and ownable way to communicate its purpose.
With the signature established, creative development focused on understanding how that behavior could scale beyond a single animation. Through extensive motion studies, experimentation, and iteration, we pressure-tested the system across a wide range of contexts to ensure it remained recognizable wherever it appeared.

The result was a behavioral language that could flex across campaigns, product storytelling, and everyday brand communications while preserving the same core expression of circularity.
As the system matured, it was captured within a comprehensive set of motion guidelines designed to help teams apply the identity consistently over time.
Every behavior, principle, and implementation example was documented to ensure the motion system could continue evolving without losing its defining characteristics.
The motion system extended across typography, color, layout, photography, product imagery, sequencing, and supporting brand assets, each designed to reinforce the same behavioral vision.

Together they formed a modular system that could adapt to new campaigns and applications while remaining unmistakably Back Market.
